We have been helping to make sure that domestic gas appliances are working safely and effectively in the homes of local older and disabled people.  Working in collaboration with the Gas Safe Charity and *Foundations Independent Living Trust, we have enabled vulnerable households to have gas appliances repaired, serviced, tested and replaced where necessary.

From January – July 2019, we helped 43 households in a range of circumstances, including people living without heating or hot water and people living with faulty or dangerous gas appliances.

Our caseworker supports customers by determining whether they are eligible for funding to cover the cost of work, securing funding where applicable, and arranging visits by gas engineers to carry out the work who are registered with the Gas Safe Register and compliant with current regulations.

In addition to funding from the National Gas Safety Hardship Fund, our caseworker has helped customers access top-up funding (where necessary) from a range of other organisations, including SSAFA, npower’s Health Through Warmth Scheme, The Amy Benevolent Fund, Royal British Legion, Teachers’ Union and Civil Service Charity.

Mick King, CEO at LHIA comments: ‘This valuable work of our caseworker aligns perfectly with our mission to make the homes of older and disabled people warm, safe, secure and fit for purpose. Through partnership working with a range of organisations, our caseworker has been able to support vulnerable households where potential and actual problems with domestic gas appliances have been identified.  We’ve helped address urgent safety issues and provided heating and hot water for the very people who might be most vulnerable to cold weather.’

*Foundations Independent Living Trust administers a central pot of Gas Safe Charity Hardship Funds that caseworkers from agencies providing home improvement services can access to support their clients.
